About the role
This interview assesses how you plan and conduct marine surveys, weigh incomplete evidence and communicate findings that may carry operational or commercial consequences. The panel will expect disciplined inspection methods, sound marine judgement and concise reporting. They will also test whether you can preserve independence when several parties want different conclusions.
How to prepare
- Prepare one vessel condition survey and one cargo or damage survey example with confidential details removed.
- Review how you define scope, sampling, access limits and evidence requirements before an inspection.
- Practise separating observed facts, technical analysis, conclusions and recommendations in your explanation.
- Think through situations where incomplete records or restricted access affected your confidence in a finding.
- Prepare an example of defending an unwelcome conclusion while remaining factual and professional.
Common mistakes
- Giving a firm conclusion without acknowledging gaps in access, sampling or records.
- Listing defects without explaining their material significance or required follow-up.
- Allowing a client's preferred outcome to shape the recorded evidence.
- Using technical language that obscures the decision the report must support.
