About the role
A release engineer makes software delivery repeatable, observable and safe across environments. This interview tests how you build pipelines, manage dependencies, judge production risk and coordinate a recovery when a release goes wrong.
How to prepare
- Map a pipeline you know from source control through testing, artefact creation, approval and deployment.
- Prepare an example of a risky release and the safeguards you used.
- Review staged deployment, feature flags, database migration patterns and rollback options.
- Practise explaining how release metrics led to a process improvement.
Common mistakes
- Treating a successful pipeline run as proof that customers are unaffected.
- Proposing rollback without considering data changes or dependent services.
- Focusing on tools while ignoring coordination and decision ownership.
