About the role
A UX research assistant helps a research or product team recruit participants, prepare sessions, capture observations and organise evidence. The interview looks for curiosity, neutral questioning, careful handling of participant information and the ability to turn messy notes into useful findings.
How to prepare
- Review the differences between interviews, surveys, contextual inquiry and usability testing.
- Practise writing open, neutral questions that do not reveal the answer you expect.
- Prepare an example of how you grouped observations into themes without overstating the evidence.
- Think through participant consent, confidentiality and secure research note handling.
- Rehearse a short explanation of one research finding and the product decision it could inform.
Common mistakes
- Treating personal opinions as user evidence.
- Asking leading questions that push participants towards a preferred answer.
- Claiming that a small study proves what every user will do.
- Sharing participant details when an anonymous example would be enough.
