About the role
A valuation analyst estimates the value of businesses and assets using financial forecasts, market evidence and clearly stated assumptions. The interview checks your technical foundations, spreadsheet discipline and willingness to challenge inputs while communicating uncertainty honestly.
How to prepare
- Review discounted cash flow, comparable company and precedent transaction approaches and when each is useful.
- Refresh free cash flow, discount rates, terminal value, enterprise value and equity value.
- Practise auditing a model for broken links, inconsistent units, circular references and unsupported inputs.
- Prepare to explain how you would choose comparable companies and normalise unusual financial items.
- Practise presenting sensitivities and limitations without undermining the usefulness of the analysis.
Common mistakes
- Quoting a valuation formula without explaining the economic reasoning behind its inputs.
- Using management forecasts without testing them against history and market evidence.
- Presenting a single precise value while hiding sensitivity to uncertain assumptions.
